Tristaniopsis laurina luscious. Kanooka, or Water Gum

Tristaniopsis laurina luscious is a type of Tristaniopsis , or Kanooka, that has been greatly improved through hybridisation. ‘Tristaniopsis luscious‘ is a small to medium native evergreen tree with beautiful broad, deep green foliage that turns coppery-red when new growth emerges in the spring and summer. It produces yellow flowers in summer. These characteristics separate this cultivar from other versions of this plant, including a thick habit, bigger leaves, and brilliantly coloured new growth. Because of its bigger leaf size, it is an excellent natural alternative to Magnolia.

From November to December, this tree blooms with golden flowers that had a lovely fragrance. The branches of Tristaniopsis laurina luscious create an excellent feature tree or focal point in any landscape design. New branches develop a stunning red colour as they grow, which peels back to reveal a patchwork of mottled cream bark beneath the surface of the bark. This creates fantastic contrast because, at any given time, you can have some dark stems mixed in with the elder branches and trunk, which are smooth and creamy brown in colour, creating a beautiful contrast. Growing from seven to twelve metres tall, with a spread of up to five metres, this tree makes an excellent specimen or shade tree.

T. luscious grows well in various environmental situations, but it thrives best in a warm, moist location that receives direct sunlight whenever possible. While it can survive in various Melbourne soil types, it flourishes in well-drained soils, especially when mulch is used to protect the plant. This makes Tristaniopsis laurina luscious a great feature tree for planting in large pots.

It is highly recommended for use in commercial landscaping because of its low maintenance requirements (it only requires minimal pruning to shape it when young). It looks stunning when planted in upright rows or as street trees, in native gardens as feature trees, or in tropical style gardens, where the large glossy leaves can improve the foliage effect of the planting. It can also be clipped along the edge of pools for a more modern design. The large leaves can be easily removed from the pool if there are any leaf drops.

Care of Tristaniopsis laurina luscious

This tree, as previously stated, can survive disease, frost, and drought. However, it can be affected by the attack of a few insects, which can be easily managed by spraying insecticides on the leaves and branches. Tristaniopsis laurina luscious adapts well to pruning and can be quickly shaped, making it a suitable street tree for urban environments. After the flowers have finished blooming, the tree should be pruned. Water daily for up to 13 weeks until the plant has established itself in a well-mulched garden. This is because this tree does not thrive in extremely dry conditions during the early phases of growth. Fertilising should be done in the spring season, and slow-release fertilisers should be used for best results.

Close Relatives of Kanooka or Water Gum

Tristaniopsis laurina is a plant that has several cultivars available. “Hot tips” is a cultivar with variegated leaves and new bronze-red growth, and it is one of the best. In a fire, it can be regenerated from saeed bank material and branch shoots, and sucking stems. Because it grows nearly entirely in creeks, it is rarely destroyed by fire. Water gum is a more colourful relative of the traditional Water gum. It is also linked to the Queensland brush box, an evergreen tree native to Australia and is likewise an evergreen.
