Melbourne Landscaper - Concrete pour into formwork Mill Park Leisure Centre

Melbourne Landscaper - Mill Park Leisure

Melbourne Landscaper Red's Landscaping and Civil has begun landscaping work at the Mill Park Leisure Centre.

A commercial landscape installation, like that at Mill Park Leisure, is an important part of  providing quality open, green, inclusive and accessible places for the Mill Park community. Well designed and constructed landscaped areas form the heart of local communities. It is through these areas that many people in local communities connect, play, walk or cycle. This is especially true of the landscaping of the Mill Park Leisure and aquatic centre.

Curved in-situ concrete seats by Melbourne Landscaper Red's Landscaping and Design

One of our favorite parts of the landscape design was the bespoke concrete bench seat. These are great design features that also function as a concrete retaining wall.

Formwork construction of the curved in-situ concrete seat.

Curved concrete seating in commercial landscaping of public spaces provides a great place for people to socialise and chat. Great care must be taken in the construction of the concrete formwork due to the hydraulic weight of the concrete being poured.

Good quality insitu concrete starts with solid foundations and great formwork. The photo above shows the care that has gone into creating a solid structure for the formwork. It is essential that the concrete formwork does not move during the pour, so a stiff formwork support system is constructed to pour the concrete in situ. Great care must be taken at each stage of the process to avoid damaging the new concrete. The formwork is removed by the landscapers well before the concrete is fully cured, so the concrete has not yet reached its full strength.

The completed curved in-situ concrete seats are a great part of the overall landscape design of this fantastic public space for Mill Park residents.

The curved in-situ concrete seats are a great place to watch activities on the public sports equipment or sit and have a chat.

The newly installed curved in-situ concrete seats are a great place to relax after a swim in the aquatic centre swimming pool, or in the gym or fitness classes. It is also a good vantage point to watch kids on the play equipment. The back part of the seat functions as a concrete retaining wall.

The landscape design also included an oval seat, which was timber over an in-situ concrete base. This type of seat construction combines the durability and longevity of concrete with the comfort of a wooden seat. This is a great solution for public spaces like the Mill Park Leisure Centre.

The entrance to the Aquatic Centre also includes a feature raised garden bed by the entrance. The walls of the raised garden bed were constructed using curved in-situ concrete retaining walls. This was a very nice piece of landscape design by the landscape architect, Land Design Partnership. Below is a video of the construction of the in situ concrete retaining walls for the raised garden bed.

Melbourne Garden Show - Reds Landscaping and Design

7 of the Best ideas from the Melbourne Garden Show

The Melbourne International Flower Garden Show is a great place to develop your landscape garden design ideas. If you are not in Melbourne, see if you can get to one of the annual garden shows around the country or around the world. One of the biggest shows in the Southern Hemisphere is the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show at the Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens, just north of the Melbourne CBD. Here you can see the work of some of the best landscape designers in Melbourne. This five day annual event runs until late March, so if you missed it this year, we have brought you some photos. Depending on which climate zone you are designing a garden for, your plant selection may be different.

Melbourne Edible Gardens

This year’s show featured edible gardens, workshops with local industry experts, floral art displays, garden competitions, and landscape gardens. For landscaper designers, it is also a great opportunity to talk with exhibitors and suppliers of everything from garden tools to sculptures and garden accessories.

The Welcome Landscape Garden

For the first time ever, this year’s show featured a welcome landscape garden. This garden was designed by last year’s Best in Show award winner, Phillip Withers, creative director of Phillip Withers Landscape Design. "Flourishing with a full spectrum of green hues, the biodiverse habitat is a place for visitors to relax and recline."
One of the challenges for landscape designers is developing ideas for garden focal points. Once the focal point of a garden design is established, the rest of the garden design more or less falls into place. Shows like these are ideal for helping to explore ideas for garden design. Landscaping solutions from some of Australia’s best landscape garden designers are on display at one location.

Garden Shows – A great source of Landscape Design Ideas and the latest trends

Garden shows like the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, Brisbane International Garden Show, and the recent Brisbane Garden and Plant Expo are favourites with hobby gardeners, professional landscapers, horticulture students, and members of the plant nursery industry.
